Keep Pests Out for Good: Seasonal Pest Control Tips Every Homeowner Should Know
Pests don’t need a formal invitation to move in, they’re just waiting for a cracked window, a crumb in the corner, or an ignored leak to make your house their new home. But here’s the good news: you can take proactive steps to prevent infestations before they ever start.
Dr. Benjamin Hottel, an entomologist with Orkin's parent company Rollins, shared some simple but powerful prevention strategies that target the root causes of pest problems. The key is to think like a bug—and then make your home as uninviting as possible.
1. Tidy Up Your Nest Before They Find One
Pests love clutter. Unused boxes, forgotten corners in garages and attics, or storage spaces packed to the brim all offer the perfect place to hide and nest. According to Hottel:
“Remove unnecessary items from basements, attics, and garages to eliminate potential hiding spots for spring pests.”
In the kitchen, food debris is a buffet for bugs. Clean under appliances, wipe out cabinets, and store food in sealed containers. Trash should be taken out regularly and kept in bins with tight-fitting lids.
2. Close the Doors (and Windows) on Pest Entry
Windows and doors are common entry points, especially if screens are damaged or door sweeps are missing. Install or repair these barriers to keep flying insects and sneaky rodents out. Adding weatherstripping not only keeps bugs out, but it also improves energy efficiency.
“Ensure window and door screens are intact… and install door sweeps to prevent insects and rodents from entering,” said Hottel.
3. Don’t Overlook the Small Stuff—Cracks and Gaps Matter
Tiny cracks around windows, in your foundation, or near utility penetrations are open invitations to pests, especially when they’re seeking warmth in colder months. Sealing those gaps can go a long way in protecting your home from insects and rodents.
“Even tiny openings can serve as entry points for pests seeking warmth.”
4. Control Moisture Like Your Home Depends on It—Because It Does
Leaks under sinks or around appliances may seem minor, but they create ideal habitats for pests like booklice and silverfish. High humidity can do the same. Address any water issues quickly and use a dehumidifier in problem areas if needed.
Pest prevention isn’t about a single product or service, it’s a strategy. Clean, seal, monitor, and repeat. The less attractive your home is to pests, the more likely they’ll stay away. Prevention may not be flashy, but it beats battling a full-blown infestation any day.
